New York Discovery Day
BattleFin, an asset management firm that leverages technology and alternative data to produce uncorrelated absolute returns, has been sponsoring events enabling investors to discover new technology and alternative data vendors in Miami, FL; New York, NY; Hong Kong; and London, UK for the past few years.
The 2018 New York event, scheduled for June 20th aboard the battleship Intrepid, is looking to be BattleFin’s largest event to date in terms of the number of vendors and number of buy-side attendees. Currently, there are over 500 attendees signed up, comprised of 230 hedge funds and investment firms representing over $2 Trillion in AUM. In addition, close to 150 alternative data companies are expected to participate, compared to 30 alternative data firms at last year’s New York event.
One of the unique features of BattleFin’s Discovery Days are the speed dating like meetings that are facilitated at the event. BattleFin expects to hold over 2,000 of these one-on-one meetings at this year’s New York conference.
In addition, BattleFin will be making a number of new announcements around technology offerings and data scientist initiatives at the event. They will also be reporting on the a few of the alpha generating strategies that BattleFin has discovered and implemented in partnership with some of the alternative data providers in attendance. A few of the topics slated to be covered by speakers at this year’s event include:
- An intro to finding alpha in alternative data,
- Using alternative data to generate industrial & transport ideas,
- Using alternative data to generate longer-term consumer/retail insights,
- Data compliance issues,
- The rise of alternative data ion the healthcare space,
- Textual content: the next alternative data source, and
- Using receipt and credit card data to derive retail and consumer ideas.

Integrity Research attended BattleFin’s Miami Discovery Day held this past January and it was a great event. Most of the data buyers we spoke with felt like it was an extremely efficient way to meet and compare a number of vendors providing similar data, as well as a great opportunity to discover new vendors they had yet to meet with. All of the data vendors we spoke to thought the Discovery Day format enabled them to meet a number of high quality potential customers.
The upcoming New York BattleFin Discovery Day aboard the Intrepid should be one of the largest one-day conferences dedicated specifically to buyers and providers of alternative data in 2018. Consequently, we expect to see most of the firms that are serious players in this space in attendance from the buy-side, sell-side and the data vendor community.
