Last week, independent primary research firm BWG Strategy and OTR Global (a BWG subsidiary), announced the addition of experienced healthcare industry professional Michael Morabito, Ph.D. as the new Head of Healthcare Research.

Latest Addition to BWG Strategy

Michael Morabito, Ph.D. joins BWG Research and OTR Global as the Head of Healthcare Research from Solebury Strategic Communications where he worked for two years as a Managing Director of Investor Relations for the Life Sciences division. Prior to his stint at Solebury, Mr. Morabito spent two years at investment bank Chardan Capital Markets as Senior Research Analyst covering SMid Cap Biotechnology stocks.

Previously, Michael spent 3 years at Credit Suisse as an equity research analyst covering SMid Cap biotechnology companies.  Before Credit Suisse, Morabito worked for more than 5 years as an Associate Research Scientist at Colombia University Medical Center.  Earlier in his career, Michael spent more than 10 years as a Post-Doctoral Fellow and Graduate Student at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and as a Scientific Administrator in Genetic Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine.  Morabito also boasts an impressive portfolio of published articles, including four as the first author.  Michael is an alumnus of the University of Virginia where he earned a BA in Biology, and Vanderbilt University where he received a Ph.D. in Neuroscience.

Anil Prahlad, CEO of BWG Strategy, welcomed Michael Morabito to the team, stating, “We are delighted to welcome Michael to BWG Strategy and OTR Global. His wealth of experience in academic and sell-side research will further elevate the quality and depth of our healthcare coverage, strengthening our position as a leader in the investment research space.”

Our Take

BWG Strategy originated in 2013, when co-founder Bill Williams left JNK Securities where he had been managing its successful industry forums.  BWG Strategy progressively ramped up the frequency of its sessions as the company scaled its business.  BWG Strategy now conducts events on a near daily basis, covering sector, company, and technology trends.  It has similar sector coverage to OTR, focusing primarily on technology, financials, consumer, healthcare, media and real estate.

Founded in 1995, OTR Global is one of the world’s most prominent channel check providers, conducting over 12,000 interviews annually with channel contacts such as suppliers, vendors, distributors and key customers of publicly traded companies.  Unlike BWG Strategy, OTR has a global footprint, conducting channel checks in more than 25 countries.

In March 2023, OTR Global was acquired by primary research firm BWG Strategy.  The merger between the two primary research firms combines OTR Global’s extensive contacts with journalists who moonlight as channel checkers with BWG Strategy’s staff focused on sourcing industry contacts for topical events and seminars.  The two companies provide industry research and insights for institutional investors, consulting and private equity firms.

The addition of an experienced senior healthcare professional like Michael Morabito, Ph.D. to head up BWG Strategy’s healthcare practice makes considerable sense as this sector has been in high demand from the institutional investor community in recent years.  Not only will Morabito oversee BWG Strategy’s existing healthcare coverage, but he will also be responsible for expanding the firms’ various research initiatives in the healthcare space in the coming years.
