New York, NY – Less than two months ago, Jeff DeGraaf, Institutional Investor’s top ranked technical analyst for the past six years, left ISI to open his own hedge fund and to set up his own independent research firm. Last week, DeGraaf’s new research firm, Renaissance Macro Research, has joined Boston-based agency broker, Pulse Trading’s growing platform of independent research firms.
The resulting commercial arrangement will enable buy-side clients to obtain New York based Renaissance Macro’s combination of top down macro research and technical analysis, with the ability to pay for these services by trading through Pulse Trading’s agency trading desk, or their BlockCross ATS.
Prior to his work at ISI, Jeff DeGraaf had built his reputation as a top ranked technical analyst at both Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and Merrill Lynch & Co. Joining DeGraaf at Renaissance Macro is a team of at least seven sales and research professionals – six of whom worked with Jeff when he was at ISI.
This new development reflects the continuation of two trends that have been evident in the financial markets over the past few years. The first trend is top ranked sell-side analysts setting up their own independent research firms. Over the past few years, numerous sell-side analysts have successfully set up their own research operations, including Dana Telsey, Ed Wolfe, Ivy Zelman, Bill Pecoriello, Stuart Graham, Jeffrey Sprague, and now Jeff DeGraaf.
The second trend is agency brokers either partnering with, or acquiring, independent research providers in an effort to provide their buy-side clients with additional value in order to increase the average commission rate clients would be willing to pay them. Numerous firms have done this in recent months, including ITG, Instinet, Capis, among others.
