Expert Networks: Back to Basics and List

1

New York – Many members of the financial community, as well as the media, are on their toes as a result of recent investigations involving insider information obtained through expert networks. Here is some background information we have collected through many years of covering the expert network space.

As an example, one author describes how his father, a dentist with a private practice, is part of an expert network. In exchange for a fee, the dentist has provided investors with his opinions on certain equipment and products he uses on a daily basis.

The basic idea of an expert network is to match researchers (be it in the financial, corporate, governmental, or academic fields) with individuals that have expertise on the specific topic under study. Furthermore, the expert networks generally put safeguards in place to discourage the passing of material non-public information from experts to clients.

Expert networks have been around for more than 20 years. Some of these firms have been in business since the early 80’s (e.g. HCRC, Intota). However, it has only been in the last five years that expert networks have proliferated. Our 2009 report on expert networks covered 38 firms, up from the 25 firms covered in our 2008 report.

The list of expert networks is still expanding, with many of them being located outside the US, and used primarily by non-US researchers. Some of these expert networks do not work with investors much (or at all), focusing instead on corporate clients, lawyers, consultants, and the like.

In the last two weeks we have been asked dozens of times for the names of the players in expert network space. For readers interested in detailed descriptions and ratings for each one of these firms, please refer to our ResearchFocus report. For readers interested in glancing over the list of operating expert networks, Integrity is pleased to share the list resulting from our proprietary research.

Do not hesitate to contact us directly if you have any questions regarding the expert network space.
