New York – Institutional Investor, an international business publisher focused on international finance, announced its 2011 All-America Research Team. Thirty two firms are listed as “The Leaders” in equity research after being voted as such by finance professionals. The top place is retained by J.P Morgan, closely followed by Barclays Capital and BofA Merrill Lynch. The first independent research provider in the list is ISI Group, which tied in the 10th position with Goldman Sachs. Other independent research providers in the overall list include Wolfe Trahan & Co., Empirical Research Partners, and Buckingham Research Group, among others.

The rankings are the result of surveys conducted among more than, 3,500 finance professionals at 1,000 firms in the US, Europe and Asia. The respondents included directors of research, CIOs, analysts and portfolio managers, at major money management firms. The questionnaires covered 8 categories and 65 investment sectors. The votes awarded to each analyst were weighted according to the size of the participant’s firm and the place it awarded to each analyst. The company ranking reflects the number of positions its analysts achieved.

The top ten positions were occupied by sell side institutions: J.P. Morgan, Barclays Capital, BofA Merrill Lynch Research, Credit Suisse, UBS, Citi, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank Securities, Sanford C. Bernstein, and Goldman Sachs.

Independent research providers start appearing in the tenth place with ISI Group which tied with Goldman Sachs with 11 team positions. Of the 8 independents in the list, 6 occupied some position last year while two are new to the ranking this year. The “newbies” are: Buckingham Research Group and Renaissance Macro Research. Of the repeating six, only one increased its team positions in the ranking (ISI Group).  One independent decreased its team positions (Strategas Research Partners), and four maintained the same number of team positions as last year (Wolfe Trahan & Co., Empirical Research Partners, Washington Analysis, and Zelman Associates).

The table below shows the placement of independents research providers that made it into the ranking.  To view Institutional Investor’s 2011 All-America Research Team Leaders, please click here.
