Wolfe Research Adds II Ranked Metals & Mining Analyst

New York based equity research boutique, Wolfe Research, recently announced that Institutional Investor-ranked Metals and Mining analyst, Timna Tanners will be joining the firm in the early 4th Qtr, 2021.

Newest Wolfe Research Analyst

Following a career of more than 24 years as a financial journalist and sell side research analyst covering metals, mining and materials companies, Ms. Timna Tanners will be joining Wolfe Research in the early 4th Qtr, 2021.  Ms. Tanners has been ranked a #1 Metals & Mining Analyst in II’s All America Poll for eight consecutive years from 2013 to 2020.

Prior to joining Wolfe Research, Ms. Tanners spent more than 10 years at Bank of America as a Managing Director in Equity Research covering metals and mining companies.  Previously, Timna spent more than 8 years as a Research Analyst at UBS where she covered metals and materials stocks, and where she coordinated global steel coverage.  Earlier in her career, Ms. Tanners spent 5 years as a financial reporter at Thomson Reuters, where she covered a variety of topics related to commodities, energy and technology.  Timna graduated from Pomona College with a BA in Politics, a Masters in Journalism from Northwestern University, and an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management.

Wolfe Research’s founder and Managing Partner, Ed Wolfe commented on the hiring, saying, “We are excited to have Timna join our team.  She is not only a top analyst that key institutional investors rely upon, but a woman of great integrity and objectiveness in her approach.  She will immediately be a great addition to our top ranked Industrials team, as well as add an important voice to two major macro themes at Wolfe that we expect to continue to drive investor debate: Non-Growth vs. Growth and the long-term inflation trade.”

Our Take

Founded in 2008, Wolfe Research has grown from an equity research firm numbering 10 staff covering one vertical (transporation) into a 225-person financial services firm covering 30 verticals, including macro and quantitative research, Industrials, Utilities/Energy, Consumer/Retail, Financials/REITS, Healthcare and TMT.  In the 2020 Institutional Investor All American Research Poll, Wolfe was the #7 ranked firm with 27 top-ranked analysts across all industry sectors.

In July 2020, Wolfe inked a strategic alliance with Nomura Group to provide Wolfe’s equity research to Nomura clients in the US and Japan and enable Wolfe clients to execute trades through Nomura and Instinet trading desks.

The addition of a highly ranked analyst like Timna Tanners to Wolfe’s expanding equity research team is not a terribly surprising move as the firm has been especially successful in recruiting and grooming ranked analysts, enabling the firm to rise quickly in the Institutional Investor surveys.  As a boutique, Wolfe can attract top talent by offering research analysts generous compensation packages tied to their success in migrating their franchises to Wolfe’s platform.

We suspect Wolfe will continue to aggressively target highly ranked equity research analysts to join the firm in the coming few years as it builds out its research franchise and climbs the II All America Research Rankings.
